Prospective Member Orientation

Prospective Member Orientation

The Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life’s Prospective Member Orientation (PMO) is a required educational orientation for any student interested in joining a sorority or fraternity at Indiana University Bloomington. PMO is an interactive online program that allows students to learn about the rich 175+ year history of Sorority and Fraternity Life at IU, membership expectations within a sorority/fraternity, and the exploration of values to assist students before making the lifelong decision to join a sorority or fraternity.

To be eligible to join any sorority or fraternity at IU, you must complete the Prospective Member Orientation prior to being added to a chapter’s roster and before beginning the new member education process. No exceptions will be made.

This initiative came from the direction of the 2018–2019 Greek Task Force. It was identified as one of twelve new measures. This education exists to ensure all students joining the sorority and fraternity community are fully informed before beginning this lifelong journey.

PMO must be completed by all students before receiving a bid/invitation to membership and/or starting the membership intake process for any sorority or fraternity, regardless of council or chapter.

A student will not be eligible for joining a sorority or fraternity at IU until all modules are completed. You can check your completion status in the Gradebook for PMO in Canvas.

PMO is not considered for academic credit and does not affect a student’s academic course load and/or financial aid packages.

No, it is not required to pre-register. The link to access PMO will become available by August 1, so check back on our website at that time to enroll directly. However, if you would like to automatically be enrolled, you can complete the pre-registration form available May 1–August 1.

Chapters wishing to invite a member to join, or offer a bid, will confirm with OSFL staff that interested students have successfully completed all PMO modules. Students who have not successfully completed the PMO are not eligible to join a sorority or fraternity at IU.

Yes, you will need to complete PMO again. PMO is updated at the beginning of each academic year to reflect updated policies, procedures, and resources. It is important that individuals seeking membership in a sorority or fraternity have the most updated information available to them prior to joining an organization.

Questions about PMO can be directed to the Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life and a staff member will reply promptly. Please include PMO in your email subject line when reaching out.
