How Indiana University handles student misconduct

Indiana University takes any allegation of misconduct very seriously. On the Bloomington campus, the Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for investigating allegations of misconduct and overseeing the campus conduct process. Other units that play a role in this process are:

What is misconduct?

Misconduct is behavior that violates the IU Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct or other IU policies. There are four categories of misconduct:

  • Academic misconduct includes, but is not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, and violation of course rules.
  • Personal misconduct covers a wide range of acts that include, but are not limited to, trespassing, vandalism, theft, disorderly conduct, unauthorized possession or use of alcohol or drugs, and physical or verbal abuse.
  • Sexual misconduct  includes, but is not limited to, sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, domestic or dating violence, and sexual exploitation.
  • Organizational misconduct refers to misconduct by IU student organizations and includes, but is not limited to, hazing and endangering others. You can view a list of organizations currently on disciplinary status.

How do I know if I have been charged with misconduct?

If you are charged with misconduct, you will receive a letter from the Office of Student Conduct explaining the charge and the campus conduct process. It’s important that you read this letter carefully so you know what to expect and what is required of you.

Will IU notify my parents?

It depends. Your disciplinary records are confidential, but there are some circumstances under which IU may notify your parents about a misconduct charge.
