About Dr. Hylton

Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D. is the Vice Provost for Student Life at Indiana University Bloomington. Dr. Hylton provides the vision, executive leadership, oversight, and direction for the 25 departments which make up the Office of Student Life. Dr. Hylton’s main focus is to align with the IU Bloomington 2030 strategic plan to improve the experience of all students on the Bloomington campus.

Utilizing his personal experience as a first-generation college student and his dissertation research, Dr. Hylton is personally invested in giving back to the students that he serves. His goal is to positively impact academic achievement, college satisfaction, and student success.

Previously, Dr. Hylton served as the Director of the Intercultural Center and Office of Multicultural Student Programs at the University of North Carolina Asheville and Assistant Vice Provost for Student Life at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. He joined Kent State University as the Dean of Students, later becoming the first Black Vice President for Student Life, and then Senior Vice President for Student Life. Dr. Hylton has also taught Kent State graduate courses and served as co-chair of the university’s Anti-Racism Task Force, Task Force on the Fraternity and Sorority Experience, and Campus Climate Advisory Network and Response Team.

Dr. Hylton currently gives back through a number of civic and professional organizations, including leadership roles within Student Life Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA), Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities (APLU).

Dr. Hylton is the recipient of several awards, including:

  • Crain’s Cleveland Business Forty Under 40 list
  • American College Personnel Association (ACPA) Diamond Honoree
  • NASPA Pillar of the Profession Award
  • Scott Goodnight Award for Outstanding Senior Student Life Officer for NASPA Region IV-East

A native of Columbus, OH, Dr. Hylton received his bachelor’s degree in Vocal Music-Performance from Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD; his master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Ohio University in Athens, OH; a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from Morgan State; and a certificate from the Institute for Educational Management at Harvard University.

Dr. Hylton is the proud husband of Dr. Rhonda Hylton, who is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Kent State's College of Education, Health, and Human Services. They are the proud parents of two beautiful and awesome children, Emilee and Madison.
