Jean Capler, LCSW

Mental Health Specialist

Department:
Student Health Center
Subunit:
Counseling and Psychological Services

About Jean

Jean (she/her/hers) joined CAPS in December of 2023, after working for nearly 25 years in a variety of mental health and human services settings, including a hospital outpatient mental health clinic, community mental health, addictions treatment, and private practice. She has lived in Bloomington since 1992, and earned her Master in Social Work degree from IU in 2000. Jean is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, as well as a Certified Brain Injury Specialist. Her practice specialties include working with the LGBTQ+ community and people who have experienced a brain injury or concussion. Her work with clients is strengths-based, person-centered, and grounded in motivational interviewing. Her primary therapeutic orientation is Gestalt Therapy, and she also draws heavily from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based approaches as needed. Jean believes that the main factor for creating change and helping clients achieve their goals lies in developing a solid collaborative relationship between therapist and client grounded in respect.

Jean's practice extends beyond the psychotherapy office, as she believes that we cannot just work with our individual clients without also working to create a world grounded in social justice, safety, and inclusivity of all people in their diversity of identities and experiences. She does this through participation in action-oriented advocacy groups, political engagement, and serving on several boards and commissions including her current service on the board of directors for a local non-profit organization serving people experiencing homelessness and extreme poverty.

In her free time, Jean loves to spend time with her partner, play with her granddaughter, hike, camp, birdwatch, kayak, read, and take care of their five cats.
