Becoming a Groups Scholar

To be eligible for the Groups Scholars programs, students must meet the following requirements:

Be a resident of the state of Indiana
Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (Have a green card)
Meet the income and eligibility guidelines
Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5
Complete the minimum (34 hours) college preparatory courses
Be recommended to the program by a "recommender" from a high school or a community agency. A recommendation is the only way students can gain admittance to the Groups Scholars Program. Find a recommender.

Personal characteristics also are an important part of being a Groups Scholar. We look for students who demonstrate a positive attitude, a sense of civility, the ability to persevere, a strong motivation to succeed, an excellent attendance record, and a commitment to earn a college degree.

The application process begins August 1 annually. Priority consideration will be given to those applicants who complete the process by November 1. Groups will continue to accept applications until December 15.

As a first-generation graduate, I was really nervous about getting used to college. Having the opportunity to come to IU two or three months before everyone else and get acclimated to Bloomington, meet people, and meet staff was really beneficial.

How to apply to the Groups Scholars Program

Thank you for your interest in the Groups Scholars Program. We’re excited that you’re considering joining a community that supports you from the moment you apply through graduation.

Our application opens August 1 and closes December 15 each year. Follow the steps below to complete your application successfully.

Step 1: Apply to Indiana University Bloomington
Submit your application for admission using the IU Application
Step 2: Connect with a Recommender
Ask a recommender to submit your name to IU Admissions so you can receive access to the Groups Scholars Program Supplemental Application.
Step 3: Complete the Groups Application
Once you receive an email from IU Admissions, log in to your IU Portal to complete the Groups Scholars Program application. Priority consideration is given to applications completed by November 1. Applications will continue to be accepted through December 15.
Step 4: Submit your FAFSA
Complete the FAFSA and upload the FAFSA Submission Summary through your IU Portal by December 15. (Your recommender can assist if you have questions.)
Step 5: Set up your IU email
Activate and regularly check your IU email for important updates. Need help? Contact UITS for assistance.
Step 6: Receive your decision
Groups Admissions decisions are released by January 15.
