Becoming a Groups Scholar

To be eligible for the Groups Scholars programs, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a resident of the state of Indiana
  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen (Have a green card)
  • Meet the income and eligibility guidelines
  • Have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of at least 2.5
  • Complete the minimum (34 hours) college preparatory courses
  • Be recommended to the program by a "recommender" from a high school or a community agency. A recommendation is the only way students can gain admittance to the Groups Scholars Program. Find a recommender.

Personal characteristics also are an important part of being a Groups Scholar. We look for students who demonstrate a positive attitude, a sense of civility, the ability to persevere, a strong motivation to succeed, an excellent attendance record, and a commitment to earn a college degree.

The application process begins August 1 annually. Priority consideration will be given to those applicants who complete the process by November 1. Groups will continue to accept applications until December 15

As a first-generation graduate, I was really nervous about getting used to college. Having the opportunity to come to IU two or three months before everyone else and get acclimated to Bloomington, meet people, and meet staff was really beneficial.
