Federal Tuition Assistance (TA)
Federal Tuition Assistance (TA) is not a VA benefit. To use TA:
- Submit your TA request through your military branch portal (Army IgnitED, AI Portal, NCMIS, etc.).
- Upload a copy of your IU Academic Advising Report.
- Once approved, submit your Tuition Assistance Request (TAR) using the Sponsor Voucher form.
- Read the detailed Instruction Letter.
TA typically pays tuition (based on branch guidelines), but does not provide:
- A monthly stipend
- Housing or dining fees
- Other non-tuition expenses
National Guard Supplemental Grant (NGSG)
The National Guard Supplemental Grant (NGSG) is not a VA benefit. To apply:
- Submit your application through ScholarTrack
- Complete and file your FAFSA
NGSG is unrestricted aid applied to your IU Bursar bill. It may cover:
- Tuition
- Housing and dining
- Other eligible charges
If funds exceed charges, a refund may be generated.
Chapter 1606 (Montgomery GI Bill® – Selected Reserve)
To use Chapter 1606 benefits, the service member must:
- Apply through the VA and receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE). Apply as early as possible. Please note: A Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) is not a COE.
- Register for classes.
- Submit a Request for Enrollment Certification (REC) to the IU office.
Important information
Eligibility requirements vary by benefit type. The Center for Veteran and Military Students cannot determine your eligibility. All students using these benefits must attend an online orientation. You must read the Instruction Letter for:
- Payment timelines
- Enrollment and credit hour requirements
- Your responsibilities
- How funds are distributed
